QQ Recommends [Comic]: Hobbes and Bacon

Calvin and Hobbes is considered to be one of, if not the best, comic strips to ever grace newspapers. It's author, Bill Watterson, embodied what it mean to be an artist, a writer, and even a philosopher. His integrity ultimately lead the comic to be discontinued in 1995, when he refused to sell out and merchandise the strip.

Did you ever wonder what happened to Calvin after the strip ended?
So did the team over at the now defunct web comic, Pants are Overrated.

They created a small four part series showing one possible future where in Calvin and Susie got married, and had a daughter named Bacon. I personally feel that these few strips are the perfect homage to great Calvin and Hobbes; they capture the spirit original work while transitioning it to an adult perspective on parenting. If there ever was to be "more" Calvin and Hobbes, this is exactly what I would have wanted it to be.

  1. Hobbes and Bacon: Part 1
  2. Hobbes and Bacon: Part 2
  3. Hobbes and Bacon: Part 3
  4. Hobbes and Bacon: Part 4

Enjoy,
Tom

QQ Review [Wii U]: Mario Kart 8

Mario Kart 8 is the best entry to the franchise in a long time.

Mario Kart 8 focuses on racing, and puts the emphasis on speed. Everything in this iteration has been refined to get you around the both gorgeous and creatively designed tracks as quickly as possible. There is a lot to talk about here, so let's started!

The Good

The new anti gravity track segments allow for not only some very visually interesting set pieces, but they also bring about a paradigm shift with regard to how you think about engaging other karts: bumping another kart while in anti gravity mode will cause you both to receive a boost! This requires you to carefully consider when and where to bump other players as you want to be the only one who benefits from the boost.

Other mechanics that return in Mario Kart 8 include drafting, motorcycles, kart customization, gliding, jump boosts, and coins. While no single one of these is a huge game defining mechanic, I really enjoy how diverse the game play feels as a whole with all of them working together.

QQ Recommends [Card Game]: Marvel Legendary

If you enjoy the Marvel universe OR you enjoy deck building games, then Marvel Legendary is for you! Recruit a team of super heroes to help you and up to four friends defend the city from invading villains, all while trying to stop the mastermind from completing his evil scheme!

Everything mentioned above is actually in the game. Legendary offers a ton of variety by including not only a massive collection of heroes to choose from each game, but also a unique combination of henchmen villains, a single powerful mastermind villain, and scheme that sets up of a unique and challenging objective for the villains themselves. These mechanics offer so many permutations that you will never play the same game twice!

Legendary is interesting in that it can be played as a single player game, or with up to five people. It also offers the unique twist of being simultaneously a PVE and PVP game. If the mastermind succeeds in his scheme everyone loses, but if the heroes win then the player with the highest victory points will be the most legendary hero. It is an interesting dynamic that can cause you to work both with and against your friends over the course of a single game.

Enjoy,
Tom

QQ Recommends [TV Series]: The Inexplicable Universe with Neil deGrasse Tyson

Do you love Science? Math? History? Neil deGrasse Tyson? (If not... for shame!).

I just wrapped up the first two episodes of The Inexplicable Universe with Neil deGrasse Tyson (via Netflix), and I can't compliment the series enough. Neil is a great communicator and this series gives him a platform to teach us about the origins of our very knowledge (at least so far!).

I can't wait to for my next lesson! :D

See you in class,
Jordan

QQ Review [Film]: Captain America 2, The Winter Soldier

Is this the best Marvel movie yet? No, but it's really good.

With X-Men having been the only Marvel property that I enjoyed while growing up, I am just absolutely amazed how Marvel has managed to continuously make care more and more about their other properties with each and every film they release. To be honest, Captain America was always a cheesy concept to me; a star spangled man running around fighting evil with a shield. Yet somehow the 2011 film managed to turn that camp to its' advantage, with Chris Evans taking center stage as the relatable protagonist and the action being just self aware enough to go over the top without requiring me to take it too seriously, I was shocked to find myself enjoying that movie as much as I did.

(I am going to try a new format with this review, it will have only three sections: The Good, The Bad, and The Verdict.)

The Good

Captain America 2, The Winder Soldier, had a very difficult job: keep the movie fresh and fun without being able to fallback on any of original support cast, any of the World War 2 environment, or any of the 40s camp.

So how did it do? Amazingly well!
